Tithe Defaulter Schedules for Cork 1831

Tithes were a religious tax that all agricultural households were required to pay to the official state church in Ireland (Church of Ireland).  This was an increased burden Catholic farmers who were required  to pay tithes to their local church.  The resistance to paying tithes became known as the Tithe War and took place from 1831-1836.  The practice of collecting animals in lieu of payment ended in 1936 as the cost of collections to the crown was more than the debt.

These schedules are lists of the names of people who did not pay their tithes for some parishes in Cork in 1831. These files were scanned from microfiche and then converted using OCR software. Affidavits for each parish are included.
